A 2004 Social Accounting Matrix for Israel: Documentation of an Economy-Wide Database with a Focus on Agriculture, the Labour Market, and Income Distribution AgEcon
Siddig, Khalid H.A.; Flaig, Dorothee; Luckmann, Jonas; Grethe, Harald.
This document describes the Israeli Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the year 2004, developed by the Agricultural and Food Policy Group at the University of Hohenheim. The SAM is a part of a larger research project which aims to analyse several economic, trade, and labour policies in the context of economic integration of agriculture between Israel and the West Bank. Data are obtained from various sources in Israel. Sources include the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (ICBS), the Central Bank of Israel (CBI), and the Israeli Tax Authority (ITA). Data from sources outside of Israel are used to fill-in some gaps in the domestic reports. External sources include the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and...

A back-door brain drain AgEcon
Stark, Oded; Byra, Lukasz.
In this paper we study the impact of the international migration of unskilled workers on skill formation and the average skill level in the home country. We analyze what appears to be the least threatening scenario from the point of view of its effect on the supply of skills at home: namely, migration exclusively by unskilled workers. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that even without the departure of skilled workers, the home country suffers reduced aggregate skill formation. Although as a response to a higher wage rate per unit of human capital in the new equilibrium skilled workers choose to accumulate more human capital than before the opening up to migration of unskilled workers, the number and share of skilled workers in the home country’s workforce...

A Categorical Data Analysis on Risks in Agriculture AgEcon
Uematsu, Hiroki; Mishra, Ashok K..
This study compares farm operators’ risk perceptions and actual realization of risk attitudes revealed through off-farm labor, enterprise diversification, and use of contracts, crop insurance, and other types of insurance, using data from 2001 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS). Results from ordered logit model and multivariate probit models unexpectedly found that risk loving farmers are more likely to employ risk management strategies.

A concern about low relative income, and the alignment of utilitarianism with egalitarianism AgEcon
Stark, Oded; Kobus, Martyna; Jakubek, Marcin.
A utilitarian social planner who maximizes social welfare assigns the available income to those who are most efficient in converting income into utility. However, when individuals are concerned about their income falling behind the incomes of others, the optimal income distribution under utilitarianism is equality of incomes.

A COST-EFFECTIVENESS ANALYSIS OF DEMAND- AND SUPPLY-SIDE EDUCATION INTERVENTIONS: THE CASE OF PROGRESA IN MEXICO AgEcon
Coady, David P.; Parker, Susan W..
This paper is concerned with the issue of the most cost-effective way of improving access to education for poor households in developing countries. We consider two alternatives: (1) extensive expansion of the school system (i.e., bringing education to the poor) and (2) subsidizing investment in education by the poor (i.e., bringing the poor to the education system). To this end, we evaluate the Programa Nacional de Educación, Salud y Alimentación (PROGRESA), a large poverty alleviation program recently introduced in Mexico that subsidizes education. Using double-difference regression estimators on data collected before and after the program for randomly selected control and treatment households, we estimate the relative impacts of the demand- and...

A Cross Comparison Between California and Its Domestic and International Competitors With Respect to Key Labor Issues AgEcon
Hurley, Sean P..
California had a market value of agricultural products sold of $25.7 billion in the year 2002 ranking it as the top agricultural producing state in the country. Approximately 74% of this market value was attributed to crop sales. California producers spent nearly $20.5 billion on total farm expenses. The largest single expense for agricultural producers in the state was labor at $4.3 billion. Another $1.6 billion was spent on contract labor. Hired and contract labor expenses accounted for nearly 29% of total farm expense. Approximately 34,000 California farms hired over 535,000 laborers. Of these farms, 25% reported hiring migrant labor and 29% hired 10 or more employees. With labor being such an integral part of the California producers’ operations, the...

A diplomás munkaerő helyzetének vizsgálata (Heves, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megyékben és Budapesten) AgEcon
Toth, Eszter.
-------------------- Based on 1022 answers of a survey it can be stated that the characteristic range of net average monthly salary is between 100 and 180 thousand HUF among...

A Discriminant Analysis of Factors Associated with The Adoption Of Certified Organic Farming By Smallholder Farmers in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa AgEcon
Kisaka-Lwayo, Maggie.
Discriminant analysis was used to identify the characteristics that distinguish between fully-certified organic, partially-certified organic and non-organic farmers in Umbumbulu district, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa (SA) during October- November 2004. 200 farmers interviewed were drawn by purposively selecting the 151 members of the Ezemvelo Farmers’ Organisation (EFO), and by random sampling 49 non-organic farmers in wards neighbouring EFO. Results from the two estimated discriminant functions suggested that farmers with higher household sizes, incomes, input costs per hectare and number of chickens owned, locations further from innovators and less risk aversion were more likely to be certified as organic. Household location should be considered in...

A főfoglalkozású egyéni gazdák habitusai Magyarországon AgEcon
Kovacs, Terez.

Kiss, Krisztian; Szekeresne, Koteles Rita.
A tanulmányban kérdőíves felmérésünk eredményeire támaszkodva bemutatjuk a 2007-ben megalakult LEADER HACS-ok fontosabb működési jellemzőit. Országos felmérésünkből kiderül, hogy nincsen hagyománya, gyakorlata a fejlesztésekben való együttműködésnek, holott a helyi program végrehajtása nagymértékben múlik a helyi társadalom felkészültségén, az emberek és szervezetek együttműködésén. A HACS-ok által lefedett térségek fejlődését több vonatkozásban a humán erőforrások, a vidéki emberek és közösségeik (az ún. szoft tényezők) hiányosságai gátolják, következésképpen sürgető a humán erőforrások fejlesztése is. A HACS-ok feladatuknak a támogatási források odaítélését tartják, ami fontos, de korántsem elégséges ahhoz, hogy a tőlük elvárt, a helyi vidékfejlesztési...

A History of Violence: Testing the ‘Culture of Honor’ in the US South AgEcon
Grosjean, Pauline.
Using historical data on early settlers to the United States, this paper tests and confirms the “Culture of Honor” hypothesis by socio-psychologists Dov Cohen and Richard Nisbett (1994, 1996). This hypothesis argues that the high prevalence of homicides in the US South stems from the fact that it was a frontier region settled by people whose economy was based on herding: the Scotch-Irish. Herding societies develop cultures of honors for reasons having to do with their precariousness: violence is a necessary condition to preserve a reputation for toughness and deter animal theft. Using historical census data on waves of settlers from Europe and relating contemporaneous violence to early Scotch-Irish settlers, this paper provides a test of the link between...

Individual expectations of the rural young people regarding their future have a great impact on the survival and economical development of the Hungarian rural communities from Romania. This paper tries to answer questions such as: will young ethnic Hungarians facing the first and decisive step in their life regarding their career continue education? What professions will they choose? Where will they look for employment and settle down? Statistical data show that people living in rural areas are less educated than those from the urban areas. People with low education face more difficulties in finding employment and also earn less than the better educated ones, therefore it is very important for rural young people to continue education. As continuing...
